Turkey Carving 101
When you've got a hungry group of folks waiting on you to kick off the Thanksgiving feast, you'll want to be prepared with the skills and know-how to carve the turkey. Luckily, it's easier than most people think! Use this simple guide to get the job done.
Step-by-Step Process
Your turkey is cooked to perfection. Now it is time to carve and serve. Make sure your knife is sharpened. Cut one side of the turkey at a time for efficiency.
Step 1: Remove Leg and Thigh
- Cut through skin connecting wing at joint
- Push down on wing to separate wing from body at joint
- Slice through joint to remove leg/thigh section
- Separate drumstick from thigh
Step 2: Remove Breast and Wing
- Slice along breastbone through the skin
- Remove breast and lay flat
- Detach wing at the joint
Step 3: Repeat on Other Side
- Turn turkey and follow steps 1-2 for the opposite side
Step 4: Slice and Arrange
- Cut breast meat at a slight angle into thin slices
- Remove thigh meat from bone
- Arrange all parts on a platter
- Garnish if desired
Additional Tips
- Stabilize cutting board with a damp towel underneath.
- Keep carved turkey warm in a low-temperature oven if not serving immediately.
- Refrigerate carcass for future use in soup.
