How to Clean A Leek

Step 1

Cut off the dark green end of leek and discard. Next, cut off root end and discard. Slice remaining white stalk in half lengthwise.

Step 2

If recipe uses halved leeks, hold upside-down under running water while gently separating layers to remove grit. if using chopped leeks, slice stalks into half moons.

Step 3

Transfer leeks to bowl of cool water, swishing to let grit sink to bottom.

Step 4

Using a slotted spoon, transfer leeks to colander to drain (do not pour directly into colander).
